HISTORY
Kingussie
is the capital of Badenoch and nestles beside the River Spey
at the foothills of the Cairngorms and Monadhliath Mountains,
in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
The
town has a population of 1400 people and is overlooked
by Creag Bheag, a 1,581ft foothill which can be climbed
from the direction of Loch Gynack and the west end of West
Terrace.
The
name Kingussie comes from the Gaelic word Cinn-a ghiuthsaich,
meaning, head of the pine wood.
To
the south of Kingussie lies the ruin of Ruthven Barracks
which was last occupied by the Jacobites en route to Culloden.
The barracks are situated on the site of the historic Ruthven
Castle, home of the legendary 14th Century son of King
Robert the 2nd, Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch.
